For Nina, the answer begins with a fall, a fold-up walker, and three index cards on the living room floor: keep, donate, trash. Helping her seventy-two-year-old mother Ruth downsize, she finds the pile that was never labeled… a shoebox at the back of a closet holding a passport, an old letter, and a photograph of a woman she doesn't quite recognize, laughing beside a man who was never her father.

What starts as an ordinary afternoon of sorting becomes something else entirely: a conversation fifty years in the making, about a life Ruth almost lived, and a fear she handed down calling it love.
